The International chess tournament SBERBANK OPEN took place in Kyiv, that has become a major event for the world chess community. The competitions, where its analogs have never been held before in Ukraine, took place from 3th to 8th of June on the main sport arena of the country – NSC “Olimpiyskiy”. The organizer of the tournament was JSC "Sberbank of Russia”. BrigRetail LLC became a partner of the tournament.
SBERBANK OPEN was added to the competition calendar of The International Chess Federation and it was also added to the calendar plan of the Ministry of Education and Science of sports and recreational activities.
There were 3 tournaments in the program of this amplitudinous chess event: “A” (for world level grand masters, 5 – 8 June), “B” (children open, 3 – 8 June) and “C” (for employees of the Group Sberbank of Russia). The participants of SBERBANK OPEN were sportsmen from 11 countries: Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Hungary, Austria, Germany, Turkey and India.
In super tournament “A” ten world stars have played: sevenfold World champion Anatoliy Karpov (Russia), effective rapid chess World champion Sergey Kariakin (Russia), World champion Veselin Topalov (Bulgary), the first Fisher Random chess champion of the World, contender for the World crown Peter Leko (Hungary), two-fold Olympic champion Pavel Elyanov (Ukraine), European champion Evgeniy Tomashevski (Russia), European champion in the list of the picked team of Germany Arkadiy Naydich (Germany), Ukrainian champion Oleksandr Arashchenko, vice-champion of the world among juniors Sergey Zhalko (Belarus), effective champion of Ukraine Anton Korobov. Grand masters have played rapid chess, playing was based on round robin.
Sergey Kariakin (Russia), the effective rapid chess World champion, celebrated the victory in this super tournament. The sixth World FIDE champion Veselin Topalov (Bulgaria) took the second place, contender for the World crown Peter Leko (Hungary) took the third one.
The winner of the children’s classic chess tournament “B”, in which around 200 young chess-players from different countries took part, has become 15-years old Pavel Vorontsov from Kiev.
Among employees of the Group of Sberbank of Russia Vladimir Vinogradov from northwest JSC “Sberbank of Russia” won rapid chess tournament “C”.
